Global Cat Days! Meow Meow!

Wild Tiger Subspecies

Not many of us know that three cat days just gone past over the last few weeks. First was Global Tiger Day on July 28. Since I have been an avid tiger biologist for many years and working with tiger conservation for over two decades, you can check out my recent posts on tiger ecology and conservation by clicking this hotspot link http://www.speciesecology.wordpress.com. Next come International Cat Day on August 8. I think it’s a day for all domestic cats but I am not fully sure. What does matter most to me is it’s a day that gives us – the cat lovers to do whatever we can do to create cat conservation awareness and education via web portal. Although domestic cats are not endangered, but many of us may only have the opportunity in life time to spend time with domestic cats as oppose to their wild cousins like tigers, lions, snow leopard, jaguar, mountain lion and many more…. since 99% of the genes / DNA are same for both domestic and wild cats, we can surely take our pet cats as a role model to create ecological education and awareness to help protect big cats and their habitats currently under deep trouble due to human induced negative pressure across the globe. The last one was International Lion Day on August 10. Lions are in serious problem. Over 50% of the lions in the wild are now extinct forever, and remaining population are facing extinction problem notably in west African countries. Asiatic lions are almost extinct in the wild, only a small population now live in Gir Forest of India. Same can apply for many other big cats, for example tigers now live in a very fragmented landscape across Asia. 97% of the tigers disappeared over the last 100 years and current population is less than 3900 in the wild. Same goes for Arabian Leopards, Himalayan Snow Leopards, Asiatic Cheetah and many more wild cats from large to small size. Our domestic cat friends can provoke sheer sense of joy, affection and tolerance for big cats that humans are persecuting for ruthless immoral reasons without knowing the ecological significance of these breathtaking mammals across the hemisphere.
